In response to skyrocketing gasoline prices, State Senator Dave Syverson is calling for an immediate cap to be placed on the state sales tax on motor fuel.
Illinois has two types of taxes on gasoline: a motor fuel tax and a sales tax. The motor fuel tax is a flat tax that doesn't change if the price of gasoline changes.
The sales tax is proportional to the price of gasoline. The current state sales tax rate is 6.25%, plus whatever local sales tax may be imposed.
Senator Syverson is calling for the sales tax to capped at 18 cents per gallon, which is what drivers were paying last fall before prices started to climb dramatically.
